Life Transitions Testing Instruments
Questionairres and Scales
We often start with transition questionnaires and quality-of-life scales tailored to your unique life transition. These assess different domains of well-being, such as physical health, emotional well-being, social relationships, and environmental factors.
Mental Health Assessments
We then move into specific tests, including coping strategies, perceived stress, anxiety, satisfaction, and more. We tailor these tests to what you’ve told us about how you are doing and the results of the questionnaires and scales.
Specific Add-Ons
The final step in life transitions testing is adding other tests to answer your specific questions and ensure we’ve met the goals of your testing inquiry. These may be personality tests, tests for specific learning differences, emotional IQ tests, and others.
Life Transitions Testing Overview
We offer psychological testing to help people determine whether they have mild Autism, and to help those who do understand the unique aspects of their diagnosis and what it means for many areas of their life.
Psychological testing can be beneficial for individuals going through significant life transitions. Life transitions testing can help you build resilience, develop accurate and effective coping strategies, and, in some cases, enjoy the positive aspects of the transition. Life transitions include going to college, starting a career, moving to a new city, getting married or divorced, becoming a parent, retiring, or experiencing loss. These events, even the positive ones, can be stressful and emotionally challenging. Psychological testing can help provide insights that help you build strength and foresee areas of concern during these transitions.
Life Transitions Testing Protocols
Here are some common types of psychological testing that might be relevant for life transitions:
- Personality Assessment: Personality evaluation can provide valuable information about your underlying traits, coping styles, and emotional tendencies. Understanding these aspects of your personality can help you identify potential challenges and strengths in dealing with life transitions.
- Stress and Coping Assessment: These stress assessment tests are more specific tests to evaluate how you respond to stress and change. They can help identify maladaptive coping strategies and provide insights into developing healthier coping mechanisms.
- Depression and Anxiety Screening: Life transitions can trigger feelings of depression and anxiety. Screening tests can assess your emotional state and help determine the specific support and assistance to restore balance.
- Life Satisfaction and Well-being Measures: These assessments focus on your overall life satisfaction and well-being, providing a broader picture of how well you adapt to the transition.
- Career Interest and Aptitude Tests: Career interest and aptitude tests can help you discover suitable career paths and assess your abilities and strengths for transitions related to career changes or job shifts.
- Parenting Stress Assessment: For those transitioning into parenthood, parenting stress assessments can identify potential stressors and provide guidance on managing the challenges of being a new parent.
These tests are only one part of a comprehensive assessment. An individual’s unique experiences, support systems, and personal history should be considered when helping them navigate life transitions effectively.
Life Transition Testing Goals
The results of these assessments, combined with a thorough clinical evaluation, can help tailor appropriate interventions (including self-help), counseling, or informal support to facilitate a smoother transition during life changes. Through life transitions testing you’ll learn unique and tailored ways to help you grow and develop usable insights during this period of change to navigate to the most promising outcome.
Example
Emily came in for life transitions testing because she was considering a career change, making her quite anxious. She wanted to go from being a nurse to getting her MBA and going into healthcare executive management. She was not sure why she was so stressed.
We chose a life transitions testing battery consisting of a personality test, a quality of life questionnaire, and two specific anxiety and coping strategies tests. We also gathered a detailed history of how other transitions have gone and a family history.
The life transitions testing revealed that much of Emily’s anxiety was regarding performance issues. How would she be viewed by classmates and later by fellow employees after furthering her career? Would she be able to make presentations without getting overly nervous?
Emily also showed a personality style that is cautious and deliberate. While these are good qualities in most circumstances, in this case, it made her hesitant and doubtful based on irrational and exaggerated worries.
The life transitions testing report contained a variety of suggestions and tips, including referring Emily for treatment of public speaking fear, suggesting that she find a therapist to go over her performance worries in general, giving her some basic cognitive techniques to challenge irrational and exaggerated thoughts, and developing coping strategies that included mindfulness and relaxation.
