Mental Health Assessments

We then move into specific measures, including coping strategies, perceived stress, anxiety, satisfaction, and more. We tailor these to what you’ve told us about how you are doing and the results of the questionnaires and scales.

Specific Add-Ons

The final step in life transitions testing is adding other tests to answer your specific questions and ensure we’ve met the goals of your inquiry. These may be personality measures, assessments for specific learning differences, emotional IQ measures, and others. For example, an attachment style measure may help when changes affect relationships.

changeLife Transitions Testing Overview

Psychological evaluations can be beneficial for individuals going through significant changes. Life transitions testing can help you build resilience, develop accurate and effective coping strategies, and, in some cases, enjoy the positive aspects of the transition. Changes include going to college, starting a career, moving to a new city, getting married or divorced, becoming a parent, retiring, or experiencing loss. These events, even the positive ones, can be stressful and emotionally challenging. Psychological assessments can help provide insights that help you build strength and foresee areas of concern during these times.

Life Transitions Testing Protocols

Here are some common types of psychological testing that might be relevant for these assessments:

  1. Personality Assessment: A personality evaluation can provide valuable information about your underlying traits, coping styles, and emotional tendencies. Understanding these aspects of your personality can help you identify potential challenges and strengths.
  2. Stress and Coping Assessment: These stress assessments are more specific measures to evaluate how you respond to stress and change. They can help identify maladaptive coping strategies and provide insights into developing healthier coping mechanisms.
  3. Depression and Anxiety Screening: Major changes can trigger feelings of depression and anxiety. Psychological screenings can assess your emotional state and help determine the specific support and assistance to restore balance.
  4. Satisfaction and Well-being Measures: These assessments focus on your overall life satisfaction and well-being, providing a broader picture of how well you adapt to the changes.
  5. Career Interest and Aptitude: Career interest and aptitude measures can help you discover suitable career paths and assess your abilities and strengths for changes related to career changes or job shifts.
  6. Parenting Stress Assessment: For those movinging into parenthood, parenting stress assessments can identify potential stressors and provide guidance on managing the challenges of being a new parent.

These measures are only one part of a comprehensive assessment. An individual’s unique experiences, support systems, and personal history should be considered when helping them navigate change and growth effectively.

Life Transition Testing Goals

The results of these assessments, combined with a thorough clinical evaluation, can help tailor appropriate interventions (including self-help), therapy, or informal support to facilitate a smoother move during changes. Through life transitions testing you’ll learn unique and tailored ways to help you grow and develop usable insights during this period of change to navigate to the most promising outcome.

Example

Emily came in for life transitions testing because she was considering a career change, making her quite anxious. She wanted to go from being a nurse to getting her MBA and going into healthcare executive management. She was not sure why she was so stressed.

We chose a life transitions testing battery consisting of a personality inquiry (the NEO Personality Inventory), a quality of living questionnaire, and two specific measures anxiety and coping strategies. We also gathered a detailed history of how other changes have gone and a family history.

The life transitions testing revealed that much of Emily’s anxiety was regarding performance issues. How would she be viewed by classmates and later by fellow employees after furthering her career? Would she be able to make presentations without getting overly nervous?

Emily also showed a personality style that is cautious and deliberate. While these are good qualities in most circumstances, in this case, it made her hesitant and doubtful based on irrational and exaggerated worries.

The life transitions testing report contained a variety of suggestions and tips, including referring Emily for treatment of public speaking fear, suggesting that she find a therapist to go over her performance worries in general, giving her some basic cognitive techniques to challenge irrational and exaggerated thoughts, and developing coping strategies that included mindfulness and relaxation.

You can also contact us or schedule a consultation to get more information.

How Long Does Life Transitions Testing Take?

Life transitions testing involves two sessions, the first one 90 minutes and the second one 60-90 minutes. The first session is longer because it includes an intake and initial assessment. We may have you do some work on your own time as part of the transitions assessment.

How Useable are the Results of Life Transitions Testing?

Life transitions testing produces results you can use. While it certainly generates new insights and increases understanding, it also will point you toward ways to make each transition successful, increase your contentment, and build your resilience.

When Will You Send the Report?

We will produce a draft psychological testing report around two weeks after the last session. It is a draft because we want to be sure it covers everything you wanted covered and answers your questions. Around a week after that we’ll send a final report.

Can You Combine Life Transitions Testing?

Yes, we often do life transitions testing in combination with compatibility testing for example. We may suggest a good combination as we get to know you and learn what you want to get out of the evaluation. We can just add to enhance your results.
